ATG Broadcast reports upbeat and successful IBC2009

World-class television and multimedia systems integrator ATG Broadcast reports an upbeat and successful IBC2009.

"Still by far the largest broadcast technology exhibition on the Euro-Asian continent, IBC this year attracted a very healthy visitor headcount, perhaps because a lot of delegates held back this year from attending the NAB show," comments ATG Broadcast managing director Guy Elliott.

"Traffic levels around our location in the middle of Hall 8 were consistently high Friday through Monday and at times more crowded even than during the 2008 show. This vindicated our decision to take a larger stand than last year, shared with our colleagues from Danmon Systems Group. Part of our role as systems integrators is to pull multiple vendors together. Having all the major suppliers under one roof always makes IBC a useful forum for discussion of engineering, operational and commercial issues.

The Internet has become a very useful medium for tracking new technology and new products but systems integration still benefits from face-to-face discussions with clients and suppliers. IBC formed a useful forum for highly focused meetings on several projects that were in final negotiation. As a result, we were able to move far faster to a conclusion than if we had not been there."

"A key element of this year's show was the accelerating transition from SD to HD playout," adds ATG Broadcast Projects Director Dave Whitaker. "Many broadcasters are now making serious plans to migrate their SD channels to full 1080-line standard for transmission.

This is not just a US or European trend but worldwide and a natural response to the availability of affordable 40 inch 1080-native flat-panel television displays for the home. 1080-line transmission will encourage consumers to invest in even larger displays, 60 inches and beyond, as these in turn become more affordable. Beyond that, maybe 3D."
